PCOD Treatments

  • PCOD - Polycystic Ovarian Disease is a complex hormonal condition in women of reproductive age affecting one in five women and around 5-10% of the world population. Recent studies suggest that it is rising in women among Asian descent and can be considered a gynecological epidemic.

    SYMPTOMS OF PCOS/PCOD -

    1. Menstrual abnormalities like irregular cycles, no menses, heavy bleeding, etc.
    2. Skin issues such as acne, alopecia (hair fall), and facial hair growth (hirsutism).
    3. Metabolic disorders like weight gain leading to obesity, insulin resistance leading to the risk of diabetes and heart ailments, etc.
    4. Reproductive issues like difficulty or failure to conceive (infertility).

    CAUSES OF PCOD -

Though the primary cause of PCOD is not known, there may be a genetic predisposition which lacks evidence. Stress is considered a significant factor, caused by various factors such as tense interpersonal relationships, hostile family conditions, stress at the workplace, erratic work schedules, social pressure, competitive exams, dietary habits, poor lifestyle, etc. These factors have an enormous effect on our endocrine system, leading to disturbances in hormone secretions, eventually affecting our metabolism.

The female suffering from PCOS/D encounters defects in hormone regulation like insulin secretion and its action on ovaries. Excess insulin leads to the secretion of excess androgen (male hormone), which stimulates male pattern hair growth, excess facial hair, and alopecia. These hormonal imbalances also affect or prevent ovulation.

There is a rise in Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH), which leads to limited follicular development, eventually affecting the development and release of eggs. As the follicle doesn't mature, they are seen riming the ovaries as tiny cyst-like formations on ultrasound images. This results in irregular ovulation or complete lack of ovulation (anovulation) and has become a major cause of infertility nowadays.

    TREATMENT:

Conventional medicines treat symptomatically, which includes anti-diabetic drugs and oral contraceptives (hormonal pills) that may have serious complications like uterine and cervical cancer.

    PCOD & HOMEOPATHY:

Homeopathy is a holistic science that focuses on the root cause of an ailment. It helps correct hormonal imbalances naturally, regularizing ovulation as well as restoring menstrual normalcy. Homeopathy offers one of the best possible management of PCOD. It is based on individualization, meaning treating every patient as a different entity. It is safe, effective, and affordable. Along with homeopathy, lifestyle changes like diet and exercise are also an important part of the treatment.
